Learn How To Reset Schlage Keypad Lock Without Programming Code

When we think of a home security system, the first thing that comes to mind is the door lock. It would be appropriate to state that a door lock has become synonymous with home security.

I sometimes wonder about the sense of security the humans must have felt when the locks were first invented. Then after a series of innovations, we discovered smart locks that changed the home security game. Smart locks couple security with comfort and flexibility as they are bestowed with several features to make our lives easy.

When it comes to me, I am a great fan and advocate of smart locks. Though a few great locks are available in the market, I have always trusted and recommended Schlage. Schlage locks do an impressive job securing my home and keeping those anxiety pangs away, as I almost never have to bother about whether I left my home unlocked. The connectivity to home security systems and apps is the icing on the cake.

Recently, in my article about the Schlage lock blinking red, one of my readers inquired about how to reset the Schlage lock. The reader needed to do so as they were moving out of the home, but there can be several reasons why one might need to reset your Schlage lock.

To reset the Schlage smart lock, the first thing to check is whether the model of your Schlage lock is Encode or Sense, as the method to reset both the locks is slightly different. To reset the Schlage Encode lock, remove the batteries, press and hold the Schlage button and reinsert the batteries while holding the button. To reset the Schlage Sense lock, disconnect the lock batteries, press the Schlage button, and reinsert the batteries.

In this article, I will help you understand the procedure of Schlage locks in detail. We will also learn how to reprogram the Schlage lock.

Why Might You Need To Reset Your Schlage Lock?

There are different reasons why you may be looking for how to factory reset the Schlage lock. In this section of the article, we will highlight some of these reasons.

Why Might You Need To Reset Your Schlage Lock?

1. Your Schlage Lock Keypad Is Not Working

If you are a Schlage lock user and are facing an issue of the Schlage lock keypad not working, then I assure you are not the only one. Rather, the issue is commonly faced by many users. Usually, the issue of the keypad not working arises due to the low batteries, which may be fixed upon replacing the batteries on your Schlage lock. Sometimes, when the issue is unexplained or cannot be self-diagnosed, resetting the lock is a troubleshoot worth trying.

2. The Turn Lock Feature On Your Schlage Lock Is Not Working

The turn lock or thumb turn feature allows you to lock your door from outside by rotating the thumb turn and pressing the Schlage button. The turn lock feature saves significant time for users as with the feature turned on, the user does not have to enter the code to lock the door each time they leave home. If the Schlage turn lock feature of your lock is causing trouble, try updating the lock application. In case there’s no success, simply reset your Schlage lock.

3. Your Schlage Sense Lock Deadbolt Is Not Working

The Schlage Sense smart locks have a deadbolt instead of a thumb turn. The lock uses Bluetooth to pair the lock with the smartphone. In case the Bluetooth connection between your lock and the device is improper, you may face issues with the auto lock feature of your Schlage Sense lock. Resetting your lock and reprogramming it will enable you to make a fresh Bluetooth connection and solve any related issues.

4. You Can’t Remember Your Schlage Lock Programming Code

One of the most common reasons you might need to reset your Schlage lock is that you cannot remember the Schlage lock programming code. The programming code of a Schlage lock is used to put the smart lock into programming mode. The code does not unlock the smart lock but enables you to perform functions like changing or deleting the user code, activating or deactivating the vacation mode, etc. If the programming code of your Schlage lock is not working or you cannot remember the code, you will not be able to program your lock and will have to reset it.

Once you reset your Schlage lock, the lock will restore to its default settings. Even the programming code that is used to program the lock will be set to default. Hence, you will now have to reprogram your lock as per your preference and needs.

In this section of the article, we will discuss how to program different features of the Schlage lock, including changing the codes. But before that, let us throw some light on the codes associated with the Schlage locks.

Codes On Schlage Locks

There are two types of codes associated with the Schlage locks- the programming code and the user code.

The programming code is a six-digit code that is used to put the Schlage smart lock into programming mode. The code does not unlock the smart lock but is used to change the user code, activate or deactivate the vacation mode, turn the lock’s beeper on or off, activate the switch lock, etc. Hence, in order to program your Schlage smart lock, you must know the 6-digit programming code. The default programming code is printed in the user manual and is also placed at the back of the lock.

Codes On Schlage Locks

The user code is a 4-digit code that works as the key to your home or office. The fault code is printed in the manual and at the lock alongside the programming code, but you can change it using the programming code. You may set up to 19 user codes on your Schlage lock, from which one is the primary user code, and the rest are the guest codes. The user code of your Schlage smart lock must be different from the first four digits of the programming code.

How To Delete All Schlage Door Lock Codes?

Once your Schlage lock is reset, you will have to delete all the user codes from its memory as the reset process does not clear the user codes from its memory.

Here’s how to do so.

  • Step 1: Enter your default 6-digit programming code.
  • Step 2: Press the Schlage button and the number 6 on the lock keypad simultaneously.
  • Step 3: Now, enter your 6-digit default programming code again. To confirm the deletion, the Schlage button will blink green and beep.

How To Add A New User Code On Schlage Lock?

Whether you have a new Schlage lock or a factory reset Schlage lock, the following steps will help you add a user code to your smart lock. The steps may also be used to add an additional user code on the lock.

  • Step 1: Enter the 6-digit programming code on your Schlage lock’s keypad and wait till the Schlage button blinks orange and beeps thrice.
  • Step 2: Press the Schlage button and the number 1 on the keypad simultaneously and wait till the Schlage button blinks orange and beeps thrice again.
  • Step 3: Now, enter the 4-digit new user code on the keypad.
  • Step 4: Enter the same 4-digit code once more until the Schlage button flashes green to confirm your new user code.

How To Change The Programming Code On Schlage Lock?

I am sure you would not want to continue with the default programming code and would like to upgrade the security by changing the programming code after resetting your Schlage lock. Changing the codes on your Schlage locks often is something I strongly recommend to my readers.

Here are the steps to do so.

  • Step 1: Enter the existing 6-digit programming code on your Schlage lock keypad.
  • Step 2: Press the Schlage button and button three on your keypad simultaneously. You will notice that the Schlage button will flash orange and beep thrice.
  • Step 3: Now, enter the new 6-digit programming code and wait until the Schlage button flashes orange and beeps thrice again.
  • Step 4: Now re-enter the new 6-digit code programming code again. You will notice that the Schlage button will turn, indicating that the code has been changed.

How To Activate Vacation Mode On Schlage Lock?

The vacation mode on a Schlage lock disables all guest user codes at the keypad so that only the primary user code works. Vacation mode ensures that nobody can enter your home in your absence. It is a great security feature to use if you are going to be away for some days.

To activate the vacation mode, follow the steps given below.

  • Step 1: Type your 4-digit primary user code on the Schlage lock keypad.
  • Step 2: Wait till the Schlage button flashes orange and beeps three times.
  • Step 3: Then press the Schlage button and number 4 simultaneously till the Schlage button turns green.

The green light indicates that you have activated the vacation mode on your lock. Now, nobody should be able to unlock your lock using the guest user code.

FAQs

Q1. When I enter the guest user code to open my Schlage lock, my lock blinks green but won’t open. Why?

Answer – If your Schlage lock is blinking green but won’t open using a guest user code, there is a possibility that the vacation mode is activated on your lock. A vacation lock is an additional security feature that allows you to unlock the lock only using the primary user code. To access the lock using guest code, deactivate the vacation mode. Read one of my past articles for more details on Schlage lock blinking green but won’t open.

Q2. Why am I unable to create a new user code?

Answer – In most cases, there are two reasons why you may be unable to add a new user code to your Schlage lock. One, your Schlage lock already has 19 codes added to it. So, you will have to remove a code to add another.

The other reason could be that you are adding a user code with digits identical to your programming code. In this case, try adding a different user code with digits different from the first four digits of the programming code.

Q3. I cannot remember my Schlage lock programming code. How do I program my lock?

Answer – You cannot program your Schlage lock without the programming code. If you cannot remember your Schlage lock programming code, reset the lock using the steps given in the article and access the lock programs using the default programming code. The same is printed in the Schlage user manual and is also labeled at the back of the lock.

Whether your Schlage lock has run into an issue or you cannot remember the programming code of your lock, if you are Schlage lock user, you might have or may have to reset your smart lock at least once. Thanks to the user-friendly design, you can reset Schlage locks manually and quickly.
