Everything You Need To Know About Schlage Smart Lock Battery Replacement!

Since our childhood, my sister and I have been quite the opposite. She is creative, and I am technical in nature. She cooks delicious food, and I cannot even make a decent coffee; she likes to party (even at this age), and I like to relax with my Blue Moon. When it comes to anything technical in nature, she is a bit challenged. Remember the last time when she called me to ask, ‘how to change the code on my Schlage lock?’ She did it again! This time she needed assistance with replacing the Schlage lock batteries. My sister was leaving for a party when she couldn’t lock the door because the lock batteries were low, and she couldn’t even locate the keys.

As a result, she called me immediately to help her with Schlage battery replacement. Since she was getting late, it was a great time to bribe her. I agreed to help her and in return, she would bake me my favorite banana cinnamon cake.

Schlage smart locks use batteries to operate the locking mechanism of the lock. The smart lock has a status light to indicate that the batteries are low. If the status light flashes red, it means it is time to replace the lock batteries. The Schlage locks do not reset while changing the battery and the codes remain in the memory of the lock while you change the batteries.

Most Schlage smart locks require four AA batteries to function. The set of batteries in a Schlage lock usually lasts for about 1500 hours. But the duration varies depending on various factors. If your Schlage lock batteries are dead, you can replace the batteries without any hassle with the help of a Phillips-head screwdriver removing the battery cover from the lock.

In this article, we will learn how to change batteries in a Schlage door lock. But before that, let us learn the basics about Schlage lock batteries.

How Long Do Batteries In Schlage Locks Last?

Batteries are one of the most important components of any device. To keep your devices running properly, it is vital to replace your batteries at regular intervals. If you are wondering how long Schlage smart lock batteries last, then I’d say there is no definitive answer to this question. However, Schlage recommends replacing the batteries at least once a year.

The lifespan of batteries in your Schlage door lock depends upon various factors like how often the door lock is used, what type and brand of batteries are used, and the climate. The average lifespan of an AA battery is around 1500 hours, but this number can vary depending upon the mentioned factors.

Obviously, the more your door lock is used, the faster the batteries would die. If you reside in a place that is cold, the door lock batteries are going to last shorter as cold weather drains the batteries faster than hot weather. The type of batteries you use in your Schlage door lock also makes a difference in how long they last as lithium batteries have a longer lifespan as compared to alkaline batteries.

It would be fair to state that batteries from the named brand can last for up to 1200-1700 hours in a Schlage door lock. Also, I do not recommend using cheap quality batteries in your door lock as they may cause a fault in the functioning of the lock if they leak.

  • Step 5: Remove the old batteries from the lock and install new batteries keeping in mind the anode and cathode of the battery. If your Schlage door lock runs with a 9 Volts battery, remove the battery from the cover and disconnect the wire cap from the head of the battery. Then install a new 9 Volts battery and connect the wire cap to its top. In the end, carefully insert the battery back into the battery compartment.
  • Step 6: Place the battery cover back in its place.
  • Step 7: Secure the battery covers with the help of screws.
  • Step 8: Position the lock over the lock cover attached to the door. Once the lock fits properly, secure it using the screws.

How To Reset The Schlage Door Lock?

Changing the batteries of your Schlage door lock does not reset your lock therefore if you wish to reset your smart lock, you will have to remove the batteries. Resetting your door lock will set the programming code of your door lock to default and helps you in case you have forgotten your programming code.

Here’s how you can reset your Schlage door lock by removing the batteries from your lock.

  • Step 1: Disconnect the batteries of your Schlage smart lock following the steps given in the article.
  • Step 2: Press and hold the Schlage button on the door lock.
  • Step 3: Then reconnect the batteries of your lock while holding the Schlage button.
  • Step 4: Release the Schlage button once the batteries are reinserted. You will notice that the lock will perform a setup process. Wait until the bolt of the lock stops moving.

Once the lock bolt stops moving, the reset process of the lock will be complete, and you can program your door lock using the default programming code. I have covered changing programming and user codes on Schlage in great depth here.
