This weekend, the wheel of fortune rolled by my side and I was offered the chance to host our company’s Bootcamp in Orlando ! I wasn’t very sure about this since I had promised Michelle to spend time with her but as luck would have it, she too had something urgent to attend to, so I reluctantly said yes. However at some level I was also excited about the trip.

What excited me the most was that after the bootcamp, I had a day off and I could take this chance to visit my brother in Dallas. There are cheap and straight flights from Orlando to Dallas !! So, without further hemming and hawing, I accepted the proposal.

The excitement of meeting my brother kept me wide awake all night. I kept trying for a catnap, listening to music on my AirPods but couldn’t close my eyes for a bit., so rather created my checklist for the flight.

I am a slave of checklists !! Everything was well in-place but I was a bit skeptical about carrying my newly bought pair of AirPods. I chose to go with AirPods Pro, this time and I have grown very possessive of them because this is my third pair of AirPods.

I know, I shouldn’t be saying that I ‘gifted’ them to myself but after I lost my AirPods, this time, in the office, how could I not buy another?

The portability, the sleek-design and the feather-light AirPods Pro can get you easily addicted to them and I bet, no other earbuds in this world can deliver sounds in a crystal-clear manner, the way Apple AirPods do.

Third time’s a charm, isn’t it !! To be extra cautious, this time I got them engraved with my phone number so that they can find a way back home if they land into the hands of a kind stranger.

Now you know why I wanted to be absolutely indubitable whether can I use AirPods on a plane. If not permitted, I wasn’t carrying them to Orlando, they better be safe in the Case in my closet.

"Can

I quickly passed through the guidelines by the FAA and to my relief, Yay !! My tiny buddies were going to fly with me, as it is allowed to carry AirPods on a flight. I quickly looked up all the terms and conditions of carrying other electronic items on the flight and proceeded to board the Airplane.

What a phenomenal trip it was ! The tan of my love handles says it all !! Don’t you ever miss out clubbing at the Beacham if you are in Orlando, this place is actually the boss of the nightclubs.

Musing over the witty memories, I am writing this article for you to update you with the latest guidelines of the FAA about can you take AirPods on a plane.

In this editorial, you’ll also learn if can you connect AirPods to Airplane Tv to make most of the available in-flight entertainment amenities.

So, before you collect your boarding pass, go through this blurb, in detail so that you don’t sound silly asking the gorgeous flight attendant,’can I use AirPods on a plane?’

Can You Bring AirPods On A Plane?

"Can

So, if you have travel plans ahead and you possess a new pair of AirPods like me, it’s very obvious for you to think twice before carrying them and know beforehand if you can bring AirPods on a plane.

“Ofcourse, you can !”
In accordance with the FAA ( Federal Aviation Administration)’s guidelines laid out in 2013, you can bring your AirPods on a plane, without any qualm.

The Airlines have been duly instructed by the FAA to permit the passengers for carrying and using the PED( Portable Electronic Devices) during the flights and gladly, your AirPods fall into the category of a PED. You can valiantly carry them gate-to-gate on most of the Airlines, without worrying about flouting the security checks.

Other handheld devices like the MP3 players, e-readers like Kindle, headphones etc are also allowed on the flights.

The AirPods Technology

As declared by the FAA, your AirPods are counted as one of the PEDs ( Portable Electronic Devices) and can be carried along with you on the flight as they are one of the portable and electrically powered equipment which possess no potential danger to the aircraft’s signals.

When you connect your Apple AirPods to another Apple device like iPhone, iPad or a Macbook, they make use of the in-built Bluetooth protocol which connects the devices wirelessly in a span of few seconds. This Bluetooth protocol on Apple devices is actually a chip known as the H1 Processor.

"The

On the other hand, when AirPods try to connect to a non-Apple device, they connect using Bluetooth 5.0.

"Bluetooth

It takes a few seconds for a device to connect to bluetooth and the initial connections can be frustrating. The H1 Processor Chip allows the Apple devices to make this connection faster, permitting them to establish a connection within 3 seconds.

Taking AirPods Through The AirPort’s Security Check

Before you can use your AirPods onboard, you’ll first have to steer through the AirPort’s Security Check and can easily bring the AirPods, as according to the TSA ( Transport Security Administration) , they are small PEDs and possess no possible threats.
You must know how you can carry your AirPods through the tight security check at the AirPort and which items will be asked to set out separately for the X-Ray Screening.

"Taking

Smaller PEDs like the Apple AirPods can either be carried in hand or you can pack them in a tiny carry-bag.

Contrastingly, larger PEDs like your smartphone, laptops, tablets etc must be removed from your carry-on luggage and will be required to place on a separate tray for the mandatory X-Ray Screening.

Before you book your tickets, explore the Airlines ‘Electronic-Use Policy, as explained below so that there are no awkward moments before you board your flight, wondering what to do with your electronic device you have carried along but isn’t allowed on the plane.

Which Airlines Allow The Passengers To Use AirPods Onboard?

( Clear-cut Electronic-Use Policy Of The Airlines )

See, all the Airlines swear by the rules and the guidelines set by the FAA as it is the legal framework that approves usage of any device during the flights but still, the decision lies with the individual airlines to decide upon the kind of electronic devices they’ll allow their passengers to bring along.

To make it easier and more convenient for you, I’ll list down the top 10 American Airlines, here in this composition, which allow their passengers to bring the AirPods along with them and use them while the airplane soars.

The AirPods can easily be used gate-to-gate ( during taxi, takeoff and landing). Some of the prominent Airlines don’t use the word ‘gate-to-gate’ explicitly, rather, word out their rules saying that the crew in-flight will ‘notify the passengers when they can use their devices safely.’

So, the choice of words can differ slightly but most of the Airlines permit their passengers to use AirPods during the voyage.
Here is the precise and clear-cut description of the US’s topmost Airlines’ policy for permitting the passengers to use electronic devices onboard. Read them carefully before you decide which Airlines you would choose to fly with.

1. United Airlines

"United

The United Airlines was the first airline to be launched in the United States. Also, they were the first ones to permit their passengers to bring their electronic devices onboard and use them during the flight.

If you are lucky enough to fly with the United Airline’s Boeing 737 Max 8 Aircraft, you can enjoy Bluetooth – compatible Airplane TVs and stream great content while you fly. So, connect your AirPods to the aircraft’s Bluetooth and enjoy the In-flight Entertainment to the fullest.

  1. AirPods Allowed : Yes, gate-to-gate.

  2. Electronic Devices Usage Policy :

“ Within the US territories, travellers are allowed to use small, light-weight, portable devices in airplane mode at all times.”

    2. Alaska Airlines

The Alaska Airlines is a certified 3-star Airline, based on the quality of its airport, staff service and the products.

It is very popular for low-fare flights , best on-time arrivals history, high customer satisfaction , great baggage handling and as known as best-in-the-industry frequent flyer programs.

      3. Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines permitted the passengers to bring Bluetooth devices along with them in 2013 like the American Airlines.

However, they do abide by a rule that during the landing and taking off of the aircraft, your electronic devices must be turned ‘off’.

Similar to the United Airlines, they also followed the trend and secured their name among one of the first Airlines to allow the passengers to bring and use electronic services during the flight.

They call their electronic devices policy BYOD ( Bring Your Device). While allowing you to bring your own devices on board, they also clarify with this acronym that they won’t be providing you any headphones for in-flight entertainment, so you better carry your own.

“ The customers can use small portable electronic devices ( PEDs) in an ‘airplane mode’ , from gate-to-gate.”

          5. American Airlines

It is allowed to bring electronic devices on American Airlines since 2013. It goes from gate-to-gate which means that you can carry your electronic devices from the time the aircraft takes off till it touches down.

Their Jets were also ameliorated in 2021. So, on some of the planes, you can expect Bluetooth connectivity to connect your device to the In-flight entertainment.

Only limitation is that you will be asked to turn off your electronic devices below a height of 10,000 feet. How would you know, I know! The in-flight crew and the pilot will inform you when to do so.

So, it is very much allowed to carry your own electronic devices on board. You’ll be asked to switch them off only at the time of take off and landing and it will be notified by the in-flight crew.

                "Frontier

                2. Electronic Devices Usage Policy :

“ The passengers can use their personal electronic devices in ‘airplane mode’ during all the phases of the flight.”

The airlines listed above are the most prominent US airlines. You have with you now their policy regarding the permission to use PEDs during the flight. As you have learnt, the AirPods are allowed by all the airlines however, their guidelines differ minutely regarding when you can begin to use your devices.

Some of the airlines allow their passengers to use their electronic devices during all the phases of the flight and some caution to wait for the flag waved off by the inflight crew members. Sounds cool to me both ways, isn’t it !

So, go ahead and select the airline you would prefer flying with depending on your budget and travel schedule, without worrying about whether can you use AirPods on a plane.

Is It Safe To Use AirPods On A Plane ?

You learnt about the FAA’s guidelines above that you can carry and use your electronic devices on board. So, the Airlines have also shown the green flag and allowed the same during their flights.

However, there have been some unfortunate incidents which have made this permission debatable. In March 2017, there was an unexpected incident when a woman, name not mentioned due to privacy concerns, had her hair burned and her face covered in black soot after her wireless earbuds exploded in her ears while she was flying from China to Australia.

                  "Is

The earbuds, self-destructed themselves in her ears, also burned her hand when she agitatedly tore them away from her head. Luckily, the In-flight crew managed to save her further and quickly poured a bucket of water on her.

Now, it was a matter of debate that how could the earbuds blast off. Were the earbuds faulty or did they explode due to using them on the flight ?

The FAA actively took up the case and after all the investigation, it turned out the earbuds were at fault and got heated up due to a continuous usage of two-hours. That’s why the FAA hasn’t turned its back and still continues to allow the passengers to use electronic devices during the flights.

I would offer a suggestion, though. Please abide by the rules and regulations released by the Airline and turn ‘off’ the device when they ask you to do so.

Also, you must not use Cellular Data during the flight and stick to using only the AirPlane Mode after the flight takes off till it lands.

Also, refrain from using your earbuds non-stop for a long duration. Not only will they die fast , but also can hurt your ears.

While I advise you to use only the Airplane Mode on your devices, let me guide you in depth about how your AirPods work in an AirPlane Mode and how can you turn on the same on your AirPods so that you keep enjoy music and the Aircraft’s signals are also not interfered with.

Do AirPods Work On AirPlane Mode

                  "Do

“ Yes, most definitely, they do.”

If you have been doubtful about do AirPods work on a plane, I am here to help you with that. In accordance with the safety guidelines laid by the FAA, you must turn ‘on’ the AirPlane Mode on your electronic devices, be it the AirPods or your smartphone, especially at the time of take off and landing.

It’s quite simple to switch over to AirPlane Mode on AirPods . For your iPhone, most of you know must be knowing about using this feature, but here’s a quick glance :

                  "

                  1. Open the Control Center on your iPhone.

                  2. Tap on the AirPlane Mode icon.

This turns off the cellular data and switches on the AirPlane mode on your device. Don’t be anxious about using AirPods on AirPlane mode. They can still be connected to your iPhone and you can listen to music on them.

If you’re having any trouble connecting your AirPods to your iPhone now, don’t blame it on AirPlane Mode.

Check if your AirPods are fully charged and the Bluetooth on your iPhone should be turned ‘on’. You can also try resetting them and connecting fresh with your iPhone and they’ll connect as nicely as before.

Connecting AirPods to the Airplane TV Using Bluetooth

The Airlines make enhancements in their aircrafts and facilities depending on what the passengers would love to fly with and how they can deliver the best each time.

Some pioneer airlines like United and Qatar have begun to bring their bluetooth connectivity onboard for in-flight entertainment.

                    Use The Airplane’s Bluetooth Connection

                    "Use

                    1. Power ‘on’ your AirPods and press the Set-Up button to set them into the pairing mode.

                    2. Now, check the audio settings on the In-flight entertainment device i.e the Airplane TV and ensure that it’s Bluetooth is ‘on’.

                    3. Now, as your AirPods are into the pairing mode, you’ll be able to see them in the list of devices on the Airplane TV ( at times, found as ‘Source List’, or ‘Device List’)

                    4. Tap on your AirPods name to ‘Connect’ them.

What a painless and uncomplicated connection !! It’s actually easier to connect the AirPods when Bluetooth is permitted on the Airlines. They might take a bit longer to connect to the In-flight Entertainment Set up than the time taken to connect to your iPhone but it’ll connect for sure.

So, connect your AirPods and luxuriate in while you travel. If you spend time enjoying your favorite shows on your voyage, the jet-lagged feet won’t hurt much and you’ll deboard the flight, feeling cheerful and relaxed.

How To Connect AirPods To The Airplane TV When Bluetooth Connection isn’t Allowed

For using your AirPods to connect with the In-flight entertainment system when Bluetooth isn’t allowed, you’ll require to buy an Airline Bluetooth adapter which when plugged into the flight’s entertainment system, creates bluetooth signals which them, and then connect your airpods to the In-flight entertainment system wirelessly.

                      Use AirFly

                      "Use

The Air Fly was launched to bridge the gap between the wireless headphones like the AirPods and the headphone jacks. This amazing device converts the wired signals from the Airplane TV to the Bluetooth signals for your AirPods.

The coolest thing about the AirFly is that you can connect two pairs of AirPods on it and hey! isn’t that amazing !! Means while you enjoy watching the movie, your partner won’t be sulking. Both of you can connect your AirPods to the Airplane TV and have fun.

It can be considered as a ‘headphone splitter for wireless headphones.’ I would strongly recommend carrying the AirFly with you on all flights as it is very light weight and will prove so useful when Bluetooth isn’t allowed on your flight.

Sadly, most of the In-Flight Entertainment systems these days don’t allow Bluetooth. You can either use the Airplane’s headphones or yours, whichever you prefer.

I personally prefer using my AirPods rather than my headphones during the flight for the ease and comfort they provide to my ears, without hurting them.

                      "Use

There are two options to choose from i.e The AirFly ( now called the Classic) and The AirFly Pro. Both of them work pretty well on flight but I feel the AirFly Pro is a better choice because it has an integrated 3.5mm Cable and a switch for receiving and transmitting the audio which helps you identify the speed of the connection and is faster when it comes to performance.

It’s pretty easy to carry since it weighs just 16 grams and comes with a USB-C to USB-A charging cable which can be easily plugged into the jack of the Airplane’s TV set up.

How to Use AirFly to Connect AirPods to the Airplane TV

( The steps to connect the AirFly and AirFly Pro remain the same)

                      1. First and foremost, charge the Bluetooth Adapter i.e the AirFly.

                      2. Now, long press the main button on AirFly to set up the device into the pairing mode.
                        "main

                      3. Bring your AirPods closer to the AirFly and press the Set-Up button at the backside of the Charging Case to initiate pairing on them.

                      4. Now, plug in the AirFly into the Airplane’s TV jack, right in front of you.
                        "Airplane’s

                      5. This step lets the AirFly to create Bluetooth signals by connecting it to the AirPlane’s TV wired set-up.

                      6. Lights will begin to blink on both the devices, signalling the pairing process.
                        "

                      7. The lights blink faster when the AirFly and AirPods try to pair and the lights’ colour will also keep changing.
                        "

                      8. The moment you see the Airplane’s TV in the list of available devices on your phone, tap on ‘Connect’ to connect the AirPods to the Airplane TV ‘s make-shift wireless connection.

Quite simple, isn’t it !! So, guide your fellow passenger quietly if he is also struggling about do Airpods work on a plane. This way, you can easily connect your AirPods by creating Bluetooth signals if they aren’t allowed on the flight and voila !! Enjoy watching the shows on the Airplane TV with your beloved AirPods.

Can You Use AirPods On A Plane Without Wifi

                        "Can

If you are flying with Jetblue Airlines, Delta, Virgin Atlantc or Norwegian Air, you won’t have to worry about the Wi-Fi. Especially if it’s a Norwegian flight, they offer unlimited Wi-fi connectivity.

Since I was booked a seat on the SouthWest Airlines which offered no Wifi facility, like me, you must wonder about can you use AirPods on a plane without Wifi.

This is the time when Siri steps in! Siri obeys you like no other but this pretty little thing does require an internet connectivity to show her magic. You won’t be able to ‘a lot’ if you are on the Airplane and if there is no internet connectivity.

Luckily, I have a brainy trick up my sleeve which can let your AirPods work even in the times of zero internet connectivity. What you gotta do is to disable Siri and enable Voice Control.

How To Disable Siri and Enable Voice Control In Times Of Zero WiFi Connectivity

                        "How

When Siri is disabled and you switch over to the Voice Control on your iPhone, I know it’s a relatively less powerful way to command your phone but will provide you assistance to use AirPods when there is no Wifi on the Airplane.

But as you would long to listen to music during the flight, there are some specific commands on the Voice Control and most of them are for listening to music. So, even when there is no internet, you won’t be depriving yourself of your number-one tracks.

                        1. Go to Settings on your iPhone and click on General.

                        2. Now, tap on Accessibility.

                        3. Click on Interaction and tap on the Home Button there.
                          "Home

                        4. Under the Home button, you’ll see an option ‘ Press and Hold to speak.’

                        5. Now, tap on Voice Control.
                          "Voice

                        6. Now, you can use your Voice Commands to control your device.

You’ll see there are options like ‘Play songs by, Previous track and Play Album’ under the Voice Control.

How You Can Pause/Play Music On Your AirPods When Using Voice Control

On the other hand, if you are too generous to listen to the repetitive instructions by the dainty flight attendant and would love to play/pause your music in between, here’s what you can do.

                          "How

                          1. Go to Settings on your iPhone and tap on Bluetooth.

                          2. Tap on the info ‘i’ icon next to your AirPods’ name.

                          3. Now, tap on ‘ Play/ Pause.’

Therefore, do not frown if your company didn’t book you on the Norwegian, you can still listen to music on your AirPods if there is no Wifi connectivity offered on your Airplane.

Take my last input before you shut the screen off and be ready to fly. If you hate the boisterous sounds when your flight takes off or lands, you must make a choice for the best AirPods which can offer to block out background noises for you onboard.

Read the last section to find out which AirPods are the best for an in-flight journey.

Which AirPods are best to take on flights ?

( Take your pick from the AirPods Pro or Max For Travel)

                            "Which

I’m glad I carried my AirPods with me for the trip because the noise level in the cabin was so annoying. The roaring engine and the air resistance only makes it louder and worse. You must carry your headphones which offer Noise Cancellation.

There are a whole slew of options available in the market for the ‘wired’ and ‘wireless headphones’ like Sony Wireless Headphones and Bose Exclusive Noise Cancelling Headphones which you can choose from but the best one so far is the Apple AirPods Pro. If you prefer headphones over the wireless earbuds, Apple AirPods Max is an ideal pick.

                            "Which

For me, the AirPods Pro are the gold standard because of the Noise Cancellation feature, the battery life ( 4.5 hours but can go upto 24 hours on the rechargeable Case) and the wireless-ness. Somehow, I have never been comfortable with wired headphones. When not in use, either they keep hanging around my neck or I have to compromise on my carry-on luggage for them.

                            FAQs

Q1. Can I use AirPods on the plane without a Wi-fi connection ?

Answer – Ofcourse, you can. You can use your AirPods on a plane by connecting your AirPods to your phone using the wireless connection. But you must know that this won’t be an internet connection. Till the time your phone and the AirPods are in a good working connection, they’ll connect smoothly with each other using the wireless technology and you can enjoy music on your AirPods while you fly.

Q2. Is it allowed to use the AirPods at the time of takeoff ?

Answer – The FAA ( Federal Aviation Administration) permitted using Bluetooth during the flight way back in 2013. It means that you can wear AirPods gate-to-gate, legally and safely. However, the airlines still ask the boarders to switch to AirPlane Mode during the flight as the cell data carries risk during an active flight.

Q3. Are Bluetooth earbuds allowed on a plane ?

Answer – Yes, Bluetooth earbuds/headphones are allowed during the flight as they fall into the category of short-range devices and can cause almost negligible inference with the aircraft. As I mentioned above , the FAA allowed using Bluetooth headphones on airplanes long back in 2013. So, you can walk in with your Bluetooth headphones into the flight, without any hesitation.

                            Q4. Can I use Wi-Fi on a plane ?

Answer – Wi-Fi connectivity is offered by many airlines these days so that you stay connected and can easily respond to your emails, surf the internet and keep chatting with your friends. This Wi-Fi connectivity on the airplanes also works on laptops, smartphones and tablets and works even when your device is in AirPlane Mode.

Q5. What if I don’t switch ‘on’ the AirPlane Mode on my device during the flight ?

Answer – It is a strict word of caution by each Airline that at the time of take off, you must switch to the AirPlane mode on your device. If you avoid doing this, your device will keep attempting to connect with every cell-tower on the ground that the airplane passes by. So, to avoid such a disturbance on your device, you must switch to the AirPlane mode when the flight attendants ask you to do so.

                            To Sum Up :

The Airlines strive to make your journey worth every penny and leave no stone unturned, according to them, to fly you safely to your destination. It’s up to you how smartly you plan your travel and what kind of a passenger you prove it to be – Self-sufficient or an annoying one.

The man who sat next to me, kept pestering the crew members with silly questions. If I were her, I would have given him the parachute instead and would have made him fly the sky, literally.

Before you board your flight, take out some time and be very well-versed with the rules and regulations that your Airlines abide by. Be it the weight of the check-in luggage, the items to be carried in the carry-on bags and most importantly, the electronic devices. You won’t mind leaving the pickles and a pair of scissors at the airport but if AirPods weren’t allowed, there would definitely be a mini heart-attack. Luckily, they are allowed and you can enjoy listening to music and watch shows during your journey.

I hope you have packed the AirFly with you and your AirPods along with your iPhone are fully charged. Use the Airfly if there is no Bluetooth connectivity on your airplane and travel smartly.
While planning my next trip, I just learnt that there are
cheap flights to the Grand Canyon in Arizona these days. Book your tickets and tell me how it was !! Don’t forget to upload pictures and enjoy the tan!! Take care !
