6 Kwikset Smart Locks Problems Solved

Here are my answers to the most common problems that arise while Kwikset smart lock troubleshooting

My Kwikset Smartcode Keypad is not Working

When you say the Kwikset Smartcode keypad is not working, it could mean that your keypad is absolutely not responsive. Your door may not open after putting in the correct code, or your door may not lock in spite of pressing the lock button.

Such situations may arise due to multiple reasons.

One of the biggest reasons for your keypad not working could be that your keypad has locked you out.

If you put a wrong combination three or more times in less than 60 seconds, the Kwikset Smart Lock locks you out for a whole minute. Once the minute is over, the keypad should start working again.

Waited for a few minutes, but the keypad still didn’t work?

Another reason could simply be that your batteries are dead. Even though Kwikset smart locks have a low battery indicator, it’s easy to miss out on those little things often.

So, replace your old drained-out batteries with new ones.

Expert’s Tips – Always use good quality batteries. Remember, buying one set of good-quality batteries is cheaper than having to buy multiple sets of cheap batteries every week.
While putting in your new batteries, make sure to check the polarity, i.e., + matches with + and – matches with –

A new set of batteries, but the same old problem of Kwikset Smart lock not working? Then it’s time to perform the keypad error test.

After putting in the new set of batteries, turn on the number 3 switch on your lock. (This is the audio switch)

After turning on the number 3 switch, you have to test out each button on the keypad individually.

So, one by one, press each key on your Kwikset Smart lock keypad.

For each button pressed, you should hear a beep sound.

If the beep sound is not heard, the problem could be specific to your lock, and beyond repair by yourself, it’s time to contact technical support for further assistance.

My Kwikset Smartcode Lock is Not Working

Are you heading out and running Late? At that very crucial time when every second matters, your Kwikset Smart Lock stops working

If you are here reading this, I am sure your Kwikset Smart lock has put you in this situation where it just won’t lock. No matter how many times you press that lock button or turn the key, the door still remains unlocked.

There are five reasons why you could be facing this issue.

Low-Battery: If your Kwikset smart lock is low on battery, it won’t lock. If the batteries drain while the lock is locked, you could find yourself locked out of your home. A low battery is indicated by the keypad by flashing red three times along with sounding three beeps. If you see this happening, it’s time for you to get a new set of batteries for your Kwikset Smart Lock.

No User-Code: In order for your lock to lock, there should be at least one user code programmed into it. Without a user code, you cannot unlock the lock, so it is important to have user code/codes programmed.

Door Handling Process is Incomplete: The door handling process is the process by which the Kwikset Smart lock understands the structure and framing of your door. Via this process, the lock determines whether it needs to latch on the left or the right. So if this process is incomplete, your Smart Lock simply won’t understand how and where to lock. Follow these steps to complete this process if you haven’t already.

The Mounting Plate is Placing Tension on the Torque Blade: Try to lock and unlock the door with the key. If it does not rotate, remove the interior assembly from the mounting plate.

Try the key again. If it still fails to rotate, loosen the screws on the mounting plate and reposition the plate, so there is no tension on the cylinder torque blade. Make sure the latch bolt operates smoothly with its key.

The Clutch is Disengaged: Remove the battery pack. Verify that the lock can operate smoothly with the key while the interior is removed. Try to rotate the turn piece on the interior assembly to the vertical position.

If it cannot rotate to the vertical position, the clutch has become disengaged. Place the battery cover onto the interior assembly, making sure to align the turn piece with the shaft. Rotate the turn piece 180° clockwise (you will need to use force when rotating the turn piece, and you will hear it click).

This will re-engage the clutch. Align the turn piece with the torque blade and reinstall the interior assembly on the door.

My Kwikset SmartCode Lock Won’t Unlock

One time I was returning home from work after a long day, and I had to use the bathroom urgently. That’s when I faced this problem myself.

I put in the programming code twice, but both times my door didn’t unlock. Lucky for me, my wife pulled up in the driveway before I attempted the third time.

She put her code in, and we were in the house. I don’t know if I would’ve survived the 60 seconds lock-out if I had made the third wrong attempt.

So sometimes, if your Kwikset SmartCode Lock won’t unlock, it could simply be because you are putting in the wrong combination.

This may seem obvious, but when we have a lot going on on our minds, it can be easy to make such petty mistakes.

Remember, just putting in your code is not enough to unlock your door. You need to press the lock button after putting in the code to unlock your door

Make sure that lock is programmed with a minimum of one user code. Make sure your user codes are not disabled. You can fix these problems by restoring the lock to factory default settings

My Kwikset Keypad is not Working After Battery Change

You could be facing this issue for multiple reasons, so let us begin the Kwikset smart lock troubleshooting for the lock not working after the battery change.

Make sure that you’ve installed the batteries correctly.

The Batteries on My Kwikset Lock are Dying Too Soon

When high-quality alkaline batteries are used, the average battery life is expected to last up to 1-3 years on a Kwikset Smart Lock, considering an average of 10 entries per day. Life varies from lock to lock.

There are multiple scenarios and reasons due to which your batteries could be dying soon. Let’s discuss the solutions for some of the most common problems.

Expert’s Tip : While you change your batteries, always replace all the old batteries with new ones. Do not use a combination of old and new batteries, as this causes a strain on the batteries and dies them out quicker.

If your batteries drain out as quickly as in a day, then you need to replace your lock. Contact the Kwikset Support team and get assistance for the replacement process.

There could be resistance to the door, which creates an impact on the battery life of your door. Make sure that the deadbolt and the strike are aligned properly to avoid any resistance that can be created on the lock.

If you have one of the Kwikset Smart Locks with a keypad, there could be a keypad error on your lock. Follow the steps to know if your lock has a keypad error or not

  1. Install a fresh set of batteries
  2. Turn the switch #3 to ‘On’ Position
  3. Press every button on the keypad one at a time
  4. Hear for a beep on each button pressed

If you do not hear a beep sound for any of the buttons, your lock could have a keypad error. Contact the Kwikset Support Team for further assistance.

If the batteries on your SmartCode Touchscreen are draining out quickly, it could be because ‘The Wireless Card LED’s’ are staying on.

To fix this, follow these steps

  1. Remove the battery pack
  2. Press and HOLD the Program Button for ten seconds
  3. Replace the battery pack

After following these steps, if the ‘The Wireless Card LED’s’ are still on, contact Kwikset Customer Support

My Kwikset Smart Lock Doesn’t Latch Properly

If your Kwikset Smart Lock doesn’t lock properly, or maybe your locking process isn’t as smooth as it should be, there could be latching issues with your lock.

One of the most common problems for this issue arising could be that your door handling process was not done correctly or it was left incomplete.

So, perform the door handling process again by referring to your manual.

Another issue can be that your latch and strike are misaligned.

If your latch and Strike plate are aligned, then another issue can be that the hole in the door frame behind the strike is not one inch (twenty-five millimeters) deep.

To Conclude

These are the most common problems that I have come across while performing a Kwikset Smart Lock troubleshooting. Most of these problems are easy to identify and solve.

If you tried these steps and your Kwikset Smart Lock is still not working, then the issue could be bigger and specific to your lock. In such cases, it is now time to contact Kwikset Customer Support. Find their numbers below!
