This weekend, the wheel of fortune rolled by my side and I was offered the chance to host our company’s Bootcamp in Orlando ! I wasn’t very sure about this since I had promised Michelle to spend time with her but as luck would have it, she too had something urgent to attend to, so I reluctantly said yes. However at some level I was also excited about the trip.

What excited me the most was that after the bootcamp, I had a day off and I could take this chance to visit my brother in Dallas. There are cheap and straight flights  from Orlando to Dallas !! So, without further hemming and hawing,  I accepted the proposal.

The excitement of meeting my brother kept me wide awake all night. I kept trying for a catnap, listening to music on my AirPods but couldn’t close my eyes for a bit., so rather created my checklist for the flight.

I am a slave of checklists !! Everything was well in-place but I was a bit skeptical about carrying my newly bought pair of AirPods. I chose to go with AirPods Pro, this time and I have grown very possessive of them because this is my third pair of AirPods. 

I know, I shouldn’t be saying that I ‘gifted’ them to myself but after I lost my AirPods, this time, in the office, how could I not buy another? 

The portability, the sleek-design and the feather-light AirPods Pro can get you easily addicted to them and I bet, no other earbuds in this world can deliver sounds in a crystal-clear manner, the way Apple AirPods do. 

Third time’s a charm, isn’t it !! To be extra cautious, this time I got them engraved with my phone number so that they can find a way back home if they land into the hands of a kind stranger. 

Now you know why I wanted to be absolutely indubitable whether can I use AirPods on a plane. If not permitted, I wasn’t carrying them to Orlando, they better be safe in the Case in my closet.

I quickly passed through the guidelines by the FAA and to my relief, Yay !! My tiny buddies were going to fly with me, as it is allowed to carry AirPods on a flight. I quickly looked up all the terms and conditions of carrying other electronic items on the flight and proceeded to board the Airplane.

What a phenomenal trip it was ! The tan of my love handles says it all !! Don’t you ever miss out clubbing at the Beacham if you are in Orlando, this place is actually the boss of the nightclubs. 

Musing over the witty memories, I am writing this article for you to update you with the latest guidelines of the FAA about can you take AirPods on a plane.

The Airlines have been duly instructed by the FAA to permit the passengers for carrying and using the PED( Portable Electronic Devices) during the flights and gladly, your AirPods fall into the category of a PED. You can valiantly carry them gate-to-gate on most of the Airlines, without worrying about flouting the security checks. 

Other handheld devices like the MP3 players, e-readers like Kindle, headphones etc are also allowed on the flights. 

The AirPods Technology 

As declared by the FAA, your AirPods are counted as one of the PEDs ( Portable Electronic Devices) and can be carried along with you on the flight as they are one of the portable and electrically powered equipment which possess no potential danger to the aircraft’s signals.

When you connect your Apple AirPods to another Apple device like iPhone, iPad or a Macbook, they make use of the in-built Bluetooth protocol which connects the devices wirelessly in a span of few seconds. This Bluetooth protocol on Apple devices is actually a chip known as the H1 Processor.

It also caters to the passengers’ onboard entertainment by enhancing their aircrafts regularly. You’ll be shocked to know, they even have LIVE TV and an Inflight Wi-fi connection. Sounds like a complete package, right!! 
So, keep this in mind the next time you book your flight tickets. Jetblue Airlines offer flights to almost 100 cities across the United States, which includes the Caribbean and Latin America as well.

Only limitation is that you will be asked to turn off your electronic devices below a height of 10,000 feet. How would you know, I know! The in-flight crew and the pilot will inform you when to do so.

You learnt about the FAA’s guidelines above that you can carry and use your electronic devices on board. So, the Airlines have also shown the green flag and allowed the same during their flights.

However, there have been some unfortunate incidents which have made this permission debatable. In March 2017, there was an unexpected incident when a woman, name not mentioned due to privacy concerns, had her hair burned and her face covered in black soot after her wireless earbuds exploded in her ears while she was flying from China to Australia.

The earbuds, self-destructed themselves in her ears, also burned her hand when she agitatedly tore them away from her head. Luckily, the In-flight crew managed to save her further and quickly poured a bucket of water on her.

Now, it was a matter of debate that how could the earbuds blast off. Were the earbuds faulty or did they explode due to using them on the flight ?

The FAA actively took up the case and after all the investigation, it turned out the earbuds were at fault and got heated up due to a continuous usage of two-hours. That’s why the FAA hasn’t turned its back and still continues to allow the passengers to use electronic devices during the flights. 

I would offer a suggestion, though. Please abide by the rules and regulations released by the Airline and turn ‘off’ the device when they ask you to do so.

Also, you must not use Cellular Data during the flight and stick to using only the AirPlane Mode after the flight takes off till it lands. 

Also, refrain from using your earbuds non-stop for a long duration. Not only will they die fast , but also can hurt your ears.

For using your AirPods to connect with the In-flight entertainment system when Bluetooth isn’t allowed, you’ll require to buy an Airline Bluetooth adapter which when plugged into the flight’s entertainment system, creates bluetooth signals which them, and then connect your airpods to the In-flight entertainment system wirelessly.

If you are flying with Jetblue Airlines, Delta, Virgin Atlantc or Norwegian Air, you won’t have to worry about the Wi-Fi. Especially if it’s a Norwegian flight, they offer unlimited Wi-fi connectivity. 

Since I was booked a seat on the SouthWest Airlines which offered no Wifi facility, like me, you must wonder about can you use AirPods on a plane without Wifi. 

This is the time when Siri steps in! Siri obeys you like no other but this pretty little thing does require an internet connectivity to show her magic. You won’t be able to ‘a lot’ if you are on the Airplane and if there is no internet connectivity. 

Luckily, I have a brainy trick up my sleeve which can let your AirPods work even in the times of zero internet connectivity. What you gotta do is to disable Siri and enable Voice Control.

How To Disable Siri and Enable Voice Control In Times Of Zero WiFi Connectivity

When Siri is disabled and you switch over to the Voice Control on your iPhone, I know it’s a relatively less powerful way to command your phone but will provide you assistance to use AirPods when there is no Wifi on the Airplane.

But as you would long to listen to music during the flight, there are some specific commands on the Voice Control and most of them are for listening to music. So, even when there is no internet, you won’t be depriving yourself of your number-one tracks.

1. Go to Settings on your iPhone and click on General. 
2. Now, tap on Accessibility.
3. Click on Interaction and tap on the Home Button there.
   
4. Under the Home button, you’ll see an option ‘ Press and Hold to speak.’
5. Now, tap on Voice Control.
   
6. Now, you can use your Voice Commands to control your device.

You’ll see there are options like ‘Play songs by, Previous track and Play Album’ under the Voice Control.

On the other hand, if you are too generous to listen to the repetitive instructions by the dainty flight attendant and would love to play/pause your music in between, here’s what you can do.

1. Go to Settings on your iPhone and tap on Bluetooth.
2. Tap on the info ‘i’ icon next to your AirPods’ name.
3. Now, tap on ‘ Play/ Pause.’

Therefore, do not frown if your company didn’t book you on the Norwegian, you can still listen to music on your AirPods if there is no Wifi connectivity offered on your Airplane.

I’m glad I carried my AirPods with me for the trip because the noise level in the cabin was so annoying. The roaring engine and the air resistance only makes it louder and worse.You must carry your headphones which offer Noise Cancellation.

For me, the AirPods Pro are the gold standard because of the Noise Cancellation feature, the battery life ( 4.5 hours but can go upto 24 hours on the rechargeable Case) and the wireless-ness. Somehow, I have never been comfortable with wired headphones. When not in use, either they keep hanging around my neck or I have to compromise on my carry-on luggage for them.

The man who sat next to me, kept pestering the crew members with silly questions. If I were her, I would have given him the parachute instead and would have made him fly the sky, literally. 

Before you board your flight, take out some time and be very well-versed with the rules and regulations that your Airlines abide by. Be it the weight of the check-in luggage, the items to be carried in the carry-on bags and most importantly, the electronic devices. You won’t mind leaving the pickles and a pair of scissors at the airport but if AirPods weren’t allowed, there would definitely be a mini heart-attack. Luckily, they are allowed and you can enjoy listening to music and watch shows during your journey.
